Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 55yr old female with resting average BP 101/59 & heart rate of 89bpm. My weight is 220lbs & I m 5 5 tall. However, the last few days my BP is 91/52 & heart rate is 98bpm. It seems that my heart races when I m not feeling well due to pain from fibromyalgia & exhaustion from lack of rest due to pain. I take Lyrica 150mg 3xday;Cymbalta 30mg 2xday;tramadol 50mg every 4-6hrs as needed for pain from fibromyalgia;trazadone 50mg at bedtime to help me sleep;multi-vitamin;fish oil; vitamin D . I drink 3-4 cups of coffe a day. I had a stress test less than a yr ago which showed normal heart function. I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse a few yrs ago. My father had defective heart valves & my mother has high blood pressure & a severe stroke which has left her totally paralyzed on her left side. I m worried that I may be experiencing some symptoms of earlier heart disease. Please advise me as to whether my concerns are valid.
Many patients with fibromyalgia and mitral valve prolapse are more "in tune" with their inner body, and have more insight about visceral sensations including palpitations which may be benign; nevertheless it is important to rule out abnormal causes of palpitations such as arrythmias; depending on the frequency of symptoms (eg. if daily) a Holter monitor, or an event monitor for a more prolonged period of observation and correlation with symptoms
