Hello, My Gynecologist Has Prescribed Imiquimod 5% Cream To Be

Hello, my Gynecologist has prescribed Imiquimod 5% cream to be applied inside my vagina for the treatment of pre-cancerous cells. I have had a LEEP and cone biopsy of the cervix in 2004. I also had my uterus removed in 2011. My pap smears show atypical cell (not dysplasia) and positive for HPV. The last colposcopy showed high grade Dysplasia of the cervix. I was prescribed this cream 4 months ago and have not used it as I am apprehensive about using the cream inside my vagina as directed by my OB GYN.
My question is concerning the use of the Imiquimod 5% cream on the inside of my vagina as directed by my OB GYN. Is this safe to use this cream in this manner. Everthing that I have read clearly states use this cream on the outside of the vagina. I am very concerned about possible burning of tissues inside my vagina and the associated pain. I was told by my OB GYN that this treatment would be painful, but not how painful.
What can I expect to experience as far as pain on a scale of 0-10 when self administering this cream?
Will I be able to continue working and continuing on with my daily life and livelihood or will I need to convalesce at home? Will use of this cream cause permanent damage to my vagina?
I am very apprehensive about using this cream as directed by my OBGYN which is, by all accounts, against the manufactures usage guidelines.
Thank you very much.
