Hi, My husband is 74 and in a nursing home with vascular dementia. He was hospitalized in Nov. 2015, for pneumonia, kidney issues, he has copd, and had congestive hearth failure. He has a history of heart disease, had quad heart by pass in 1999, smoker for 62 yrs. He is type 2 diabetic. He was diagnosed in July 2015 with vascular dementia by neurologist, tests & MRI. After hospital in Nov, 2015 his dementia got worse and he couldn't walk, wasn't eating, he aspirated and put on nectar diet. He was told by the doctors because of his dimentia he couldn't go on diaylsis (they did get his creatitine down to his previous 2.9-3.0 range. He also has a murmur, he needs a heart valve replacement. He was told that he wasn't a candidate for this because of dementia. He was sent to his current nursing home in Dec. 2015 for rehab. He was not able to walk and couldn't do any of rehab. He is bedridden, and has to be fed and changed. He is on Medicaid now. He is on medication for C Diff. (2nd time) He lost about 30 lbs. He is now only 106 lbs. He is eating but recently started losing the weight he was gaining. He is 5'6" The last couple of weeks he was coughing, wheezing, trouble swallowing. Xrays taken of chest show no pneumonia. I was told he might be aspirating. Today a barium swallow test was done. The test showed no cancer or obstruction. He will be kept on thickened nectar liquid and up solid food (was pureed). My question to you is there anything else to be done or checked. His nursing home Dr. thinks dementia is worse and told me we can just try and make him comfortable. I am wondering if I should take him home, or get Hospice and other help involved. I don't know if he is better there or at home with me. I am 70 yrs old with knee issues. I would appreciate your opinion. I know you don't know all of the facts but I thought I would just start typing away and it might help my anxiety I have been feeling.
