Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi: My mother is 89 and living in a skilled nursing facility. Her physical health is quite good and she is not taking any meds now. Her dementia is increasing and it feels like she is 'giving up' on some of the few things that have been important to her (watching game shows; good dental hygiene). I asked the program nursing staff to explore the possibility of a prescription intervention to help her increasing downswings and minor disorientation (she has had untreated mental health issues for 50-60 years). The nursing supervisor has suggested a low dose of risperdal. My mother also has some degree of congenital heart issues (again, she is 89) which is being tracked by her health folks. Any advice on the risperdal suggestion? I would appreciate your insight. Thank you. Michael Berres
