High Cholesterol, Normal EKG. Should I Change My Diet Or Take Medication?

My total cholesterol is 252. My LDL is 176 and HDL is 76. My Trigylceride is 63. I am 50 year old male with family history of heart attacks (father and grand father). I eat well and exercise 3 to 4 times a week. I like to run and have competed in marathons. I think I am fit for my age but my recent physical revealed high cholesterol. My EKG came back normal.

Should I focus on my diet and try to reduce the LDL or should I go on medication to control my cholesterol?

Dear Sir
Thanks for writing to us.
The calculation for target LDL requires a bit of more details including presence of diabetes, any cardiovascular ailment, smoking status and age of relatives at time of beginning of anginal heart disease.
Once target LDL level is known, only then management plan can be chalked out.
Please provide the desired information.
You must focus on your diet and avoid fried oily items and saturated fats & sweets.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
