History Of Epilepsy. Taken Gardinal. How To Stop Recurrence In Old Age?
Hello, My father had epilepsy ( fits ) during his college days (Age 18-20 years), he took medicine called GARDINAL for 6 years than. After that as he didn t had any reoccurance he stopped taking the medicine than. After that, he had this disorder just now (age 60 years). Can you advise if this is possible and that what is the measure to stop reoccurance. Neurologist have prescribed Encorate Chrono 500 mg for daily 2 doses and forever. Is this OK. Girish Pune (India)
Your father has been prescribed Encorate which is an anticonvulsant medication which will hopefully prevent further seizures. This medicine is generally considered better than the Gardenal which he received during his youth because Gardenal can cause more sedation. The method to prevent recurrence is to ensure the medicine is not missed at all, to avoid precipitating factors for the epilepsy if any are there. Simple measures like not staying up all night are useful. Your neurologist may have considered ordering a scan to rule out any underlying structural cause for the seizures as well?
HELLO THIS IS DR ARPAN ,
YOUR FATHER IS HAVING SEIZURE DISORDER.
The prescription by your neurologist is right. But it is not always necessory to continue it for life.
If the fits are controlled on above doses, you can stop the drug under the guidance and followup of your doctor after a fit free period of 2 years or more.
Measures to stop recurrence
- avoid sleep deprivation
- long hours exposure to bright light
- avoid any substance abuse (if any present)
- avoid exteme emotional stress
- continue tab prescribed with good compliance,
For his own safty -
- avoid driving car or two wheelers or any large machine which can harm others .
