History Of Prostate Problems. High Lipase Level. Done MRI And US. Pancreatitis?
My 73 yo father was put in hospital yesterday with suspected pancreatitis. Never been sick in his life, other than prostate problems. Lipase was 1600 (he thinks 16,000, is that possible?). Down to 580 (he said 5800) this morning. Can this be anything other than pancreatitis? They did not check urine. I do not know of other lab results. They did an MRI and an US but I don't know the results. He is currently NPO. They said he will not be leaving the hospital tomorrow like they thought. How serious is this?
Hello user, The disease pancreatitis is not a good disease to get, as pancreas is the organ which produces all the digestive enzymes, which helps in digestion of all the food taken from mouth.
As the pancreas become inflamed, it releases most of enzymes in blood, and one of the enzyme is lipase, that's why lipase level is high in pancreatitis patient. The most important and only thing to be done in these patients is NPO (nil per oral) and plenty of IV fluids till the pancreas heals by itself. Thats why the doctor dont want him to go home.
hope my info helped you regards, Dr Hari Om Chandrakar MBBS
