Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
History Of Total Knee Replacement. Knee Pain. X-ray Shows Loosening Cement. Common Problem?
I had a total knee replacement surgery one year ago and have had continued pain in my right knee (the one that had surgery). I saw another orthopedist recently, and he said that the new x rays show that the cement that was used to hold the device in place is coming loose, and I need another surgery to correct this. I am discouraged, and don't look forward to having another surgery or paying my share of the cost. Is this a common problem? What may have caused it? I have done the PT and all recommended recovery steps.
Hi and thanks for this query. I am sorry about what you are experiencing with your knee.
Loosening cement after total knee replacement is not a common complication but it does occur in a small number of patients. The most common cause is idiopathic(unknown). However, further injury to the joint can also cause this problem. I don't think it is a result of you not doing something or having done something wrong. Don't blame yourself for being responsible for this.
Please, i know how expensive and demanding this procedure is. My advice is that you accept to go in for it again. It will greatly relief you of these pains and improve your quality of life.
Hope this answers your question. I wish you good health. Dr. Ditah
