Hoarse Voice And Having Phlegm. Related To Heart Disease? Waiting For The Test Results For A Leaky Valve
Hi, My husband recently had some tests done to determine if he possibly has a leaky heart valve ... we re still waiting for the test results. In the meantime, we re noticing that off and on his voice goes hoarse and he feels like he has phlem.. could this possibly be related to the heart issues? my email
Hi, Thanks for writing. I am a qualified and certified cardiologist. Hoarseness and phlegm can be related to leaky mitral valve producing large left atrium which in turn press the motor nerve (recurrent laryngeal Nerve) to vocal cords. It is not associated with leaky aortic valve unless it is gross and has led to Mitral regurgitation large left atrium too. Personally, I would like your doctor to see the x-ray which will show left atrium is enlarged or not and there are other causes of phlegm which are much more common and easily treatable. Laryngeal infection can produce hoarseness. Good Luck.
With Best Wishes.
