Hi,I am Raju.A.T (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A few weeks ago my wife came down with some kind of stomach illness, then about 2 weeks later I got it. The symptoms started as diarrhea then nausea, vomiting, fever, and body aches for her. My symptoms were not as severe, I had diarrhea at first then nausea and a low fever (99.9F). Now last week my wife started having diarrhea with no other symptoms and 1 week later I have the same thing. Is there a illness going around to cause this or could it be something else? There has been no traveling for either of us and we live in west central PA.
Acute vomiting and diarrhea is usually due to either viral or bacterial infection both are usually self limiting, lasting less than 10 days in most cases.
Treatment usually involves: (1)avoid solid food till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms When this time frame occurs, restart with a small amount of dry foods first.
(2)fluids mainly to prevent dehydration and to replace the electrolytes loss with vomiting or diarrhea Fluids such as oral rehydration products or sports drinks such as gatorade would be helpful to give electrolytes
(3)probiotics to help slow down the infection and help with healing
(4)medications such as pepto bismol and lomotil would help to slow down the diarrhea. Peptobismol would also help with nausea and vomiting as well
I hope this helps
