How Can severe Headache Along With Sore Throat Be Treated?
My son is 11 years old, has had headache, across his forehead, for 1 week. The head ache makes it hard for him to sleep. He has chills, no fever. He did develop a sore throat and swollen glands mid week and the doctor at urgent care diagnosed him with Strep throat - with out testing. and put him on Amoxicillin pills. He has been on antibiotics for 2-1/2 days - he did throw up a couple of times since starting the pills - but that has stopped. But the head ache and chills and dizziness has not gone away. He has a good appetite.
Hi, Thank you for your question. First of all, if your son is having headache with sorethroat and nasal discharge(you didn't mention it though) without a fever, he is most likely having a viral sinusitis. Viral sinusitis usually settles within a week with only conservative treatment. But bacterial infection usually gets superadded and the patient becomes febrile later on n then requires antibiotic treatment. Amoxicillin is the recommended antibiotic for both bacterial sinusitis and strep throat, therefore if your son is already on Amoxicillin its necessary for him to continue the antibiotic for 7 days at least. You can give him paracetamol upto four times a day for his headaches and ibuprofen thrice daily for sore throat. Keep him hydrated. He should be fine within a couple of days.
