How Can ALS Be Treated?

My son has ALS he is 37 yrs old and I want to know if there is any new treatment to help him? I know that stem cell therapy is in the process of experimental stages, but I understand that there is a stem cell of a nature that will give him more time. Wondering if this is a good opinion? At present he can walk slowly with a walker, he has no trouble breathing but his speech is starting to change. He is able to work from home and can use a computer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there. I have read through your question and would like to tell you that unfortunately there is no treatment at present for ALS. There are Medicines which can slow down the disease process. Riluzole is one drug which is used widely in ALS . You can consult his physician about it. Stem cell therapy is still under trial so it cannot be said with conviction whether it will help. I hope that answers your question. If you have any further questions please feel free to write.
