How Can COPD Be Treated?

Hello doctor I have been diagnosed with copd. My only medication is a inhaler of vermilion. A week ago I thought I had started with a virus. I felt over weak and had a temperature and a bad chest. When I went to see my doctor after not feeling any better go a week she told me it was my copd. The only info I got was to be careful not to get bronchitis because I am flying to America next week go my son s wedding. Should I have more medication.?

Hi,

Yes, you should definitely need more medicines. By your history and description, possibility of acute exacerbation of COPD is more likely. And most common cause for this is lung infection. So consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system.

You will need broad spectrum antibiotic like Levofloxacin or Azithromycin.
You will also need longer acting beta 2 agonist (LABA) (formoterol or salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (budesonide or fluticasone) along with Ventorlin inhaler. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
