I am 17 and when my baby lateral incisors came out, i never received my adult lateral incisors. I have had a brace and my teeth are straight however as the teeth 3rd from the middle have been moved into where my lateral incisors should be i wanted to know what there is i can do to make them look like normal lateral incisors rather than fangs. It is a real problem for me (mentally) as it lowers my confidence significantly. I am 17 and when my baby lateral incisors came out, i never received my adult lateral incisors. Hello
Welcome to HCM
I can understand your problem & seems you are highly concerned about aesthetics.
Missing lateral incisors is very commonest form of hypodontia seen.
As i can imagine your dentist has shifted your canine mesially & what is disturbing you is basically its shape.Might be your permanent tooth bud of lateral incisor was missing so your dentist went for this. Now you need't worry, if you want to make your canine look like lateral incisor then you need to go for veneering, the best option.Next option is get your teeth RCT treated & go for PFM capping to get it normalised.
Hello and thank you for your question.
There are a few things that a dentist can do to make your canine look more like a lateral. We can grind the tooth down until it is flat and blend it in to make it look more natural. We can place composite on the tooth to make it appear flat on the front, place an indirect porcelain veneer on the tooth or crown the tooth. Each procedure I mentioned gets more invasive and expensive as they progress.
I hope this helps give you a few treatment options to consider. Personally, I would have left the space open, placed an implant and then a crown on the implant for the most aesthetic appearance.
hi, the best solution would be to get your canines grinded (flattened) and reshaped using a composite filling, thats all you need this will improve your smile. First try out this treatment rather than going in straight for more invasive procedures.

you might have been having missing lateral incisor tooth buds. the canine is quite a big tooth compared to the lateral incisor and so the better option would be to get its root canal treated and then getting a porcelain fused to metal cap or an all ceramic cap ( if your budget permits). composite restorations are good but caps last longer and are more color stable.
there are many ways to make your canine look like lateral incisors.
either you can get canine grinded or veneering or full ceramic or metal facing bridges done.
the more expensive the method, the more accurate the treatment is.
no need to worry.its a simple, easily correctable problem.
the grinding ,eventhough its a cheaper treatment,it can cause tooth sensitivity.
veneering is only on facial aspect of tooth to get an overview.
the accurate correction is gained by full ceramic crown.

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for writing in.
I read your problem, there are so many treatment for your problem like-
1.reshaping of the canine, for this grinding of canine will be needed, which can cause sensitivity of canine.
2.veneering.
3.Full ceramic crown.
So visit to your dentist and go for a treatment which you find good.
Nothing to get worried.

If there is a gap behind canine tooth as it moved forward in the place of lateral incisor, then canine can be aligned back to its normal position.
This can be done in the natural way but you will again have to put either braces or removable orthodontic plate or appliance for a period of approximately 5 - 6 months.
Once canine is pushed back to its normal position, then you can go for Cantilever Bridge either on your Central incisor or on canine. This bridge is to be made with ceramic to give it a natural look.
Even the best treatment here is, to place an implant followed by placing a ceramic crown on it. This is best but most costly treatment if you can afford it.
Or canine can be given shape like lateral incisor by grinding or crown preparation & veneers or laminates. But frankly speaking, it should be avoided. Even if it will be less time consuming method, but not the best as sensitivity can be developed following the same.
Best is to visit orthodontist or a prosthodontist to evaluate the condition clinically & to decide the appropriate treatment.
According to your clinical history i suspect that you want your canine to look like lateral incisor
For this you need to get your canine grinded followed by the placement of prosthetic crown, veneering,
or the canine can be flattened and can be reshaped using a composite restoration.
I would suggest you to visit the Dentist and get the checkup done, discuss the treatment plan.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.
Use antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice daily.
Hi
Thanks for asking question,
In todays there are many ways correcting it.Your canine can be grinded and followed ceramic restoration can be done as grinding alone can leads to sensitivity.Crown can also be given after flattening, venering ,full ceramic facing bridges but all these procedures are costly . I suggest you to go for grinding.
Hope this will help you.
1. Grinding and reshaping of canine tooth and give a look of lateral incisor, but drawback of this treatment is sensitivity of tooth because of grinding.
2. veneering of the crown.
3. All ceramic crown.
So i would suggest you visit an endodontist or cosmetic dentist and get the correction done according to your choice.
hello missing permanent lateral incisors is a congenital anamoly now that your canines have filled up the gap between ,so what you can do is that have a radio graph done and consult with your dentist , if pulp of your canine is a bit far away and the enamel thickness is good (which normally is )than you can go for simple grinding of that conical shape and make it look like lateral incisors other option is that you go for a pure prosthodontic treatment i.e. crown or 3/4th crown placement just remember that the more costly and invasive would be the treatment the better would be the esthetics best of luck

Hi,
There are several ways to treat and correct this condition.
If the roots to the peg lateral incisor are normal sized, veneers or crowns can be placed on the peg lateral incisor to make them the proper size compared to other teeth. Porcelain veneers are the most common treatment for peg lateral incisors, and require little or no tooth preparation.
An amazing composite bonding restoration and they look good as new.
Regards.
Hi,
The permanent lateral incisors of yours could be missing since birth. It can be known if an OPG xray is taken. The option of treatment is orthodontic treatment where your canine should be shifted back and then you can go in for an all-ceramic bridge which would replace your lateral incisor and your appearence.
Missing lateral incisors is very common, and from what you have written the dentist has closed the space by moving your canines mesially. to make your canines to look like lateral incisors all you have to do is to get Porcelain veneers done for all the anteriors or maybe even just on the canines. This is not an invasive procedure, no pain,no injectios=ns or root canal treatment required. If your dentist is familiar with CadCam, just a scan and bingo the veneers are ready in a couple of hours(Lab glazing required)
Hi, you seem to be very worried and unsatisfied with your aesthetic appearance. Please do not be so depressed. You may have had missing lateral incisors which the orthodontist may have known through an X ray before starting the orthodontic treatment or braces. Hence the canines were moved into the space of lateral incisors to close the gap. The shape of canines can very well be modified and they can be made to look like lateral incisors. A good dentist will do it for you. The canines can be reduced in size all over but root canal treatment has to be carried out first to prevent sensitivity that occurs after overall reduction. Thereafter ceramic crowns with the shape of laterals can be fixed over the reduced teeth. Please go for metal free ceramic crowns. They look absolutely natural. wish you all the best!
