How Can I Relieve Pressure From My Ear So That It Is No Longer Plugged And Painful ?

I have strep throat and a sinus infection which is now being treated with an antiobiotic. My problem is that my left ear is so plugged and painful that it s no longer bearable. What can I do to relieve the pressure in my ear? Due to medication allergies I m not able to take any type of cold/flu medications. Heat is having no effect on it and I m not able to chew gum due to severe TMJ . I have pain killers but they barely touch the pain in my ear, jaw, face. I know if I could get the pressure to ease up the pain would lessen.

well regarding ear, it might be otitis media(Chronic on acute) depending upon since how long its been. You need to have a broad spectrum antibiotics plus ear drop with good analgesic effect. And in most of cases symptoms get disappear in 7 days.
But you better consult an ENT to have look inside of your ear and to evaluate it from mandibular plain...
Otherwise its normal in such illness and need dual medications in shape of good antibiotic plus eardrop

General & Family Physician Dr. Kimberly Martin's  Response
Hello and welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.

Your concurrent infections (strep and sinus) are cause a eustachion tube dysfunction. Your eustachion tube is plugged up from your sinuses. This is not uncommon. This is causing a pressure gradient in the middle ear. Until the plug is dislodged it will continue to cause pain.

I suggest flushing your sinuses with a netti pot (to rinse out the sinuses), drinking hot beverages, increasing the humidity, using a saline nasal drops/sprays. It may take a couple of days to relieve the pressure. Continue taking the antibiotic prescribed by your family doctor. If the ear pain is really unbearable, you should go to your emergency room for treatment.

I hope that I have given you an adequate answer to your questions. If you are satisfied with my answer, please accept. If you have additional questions or need additional clarification of my response, please contact me.

Be well,
Dr. Kimberly
