How Can A Bruised Knee Be Treated?

My husband feel 4 days ago and hit his knees on a cement step. one knee became very black and blue and two days later the other knee is black and blue. the bruise on the frist knee is coloring around the side of the knee. He is on warefin and I am concerned about the increaste of the colored area. Should I use cold or hot packs or what. The knees are not causing him pain.
