How Can A Cancerous Tumor Be Detected?

My daughter is scheduled for what doctors think is not canceous tumor surgery next week at Duke Univ. I think they remove slices of the tumor and send to pathology. Can they determine at that time if it is cancerous or not, or will that possibly be a day or two later?

Hi,

Yes, they can very well tell if it is cancerous or not.

The thing you are talking about is known as 'Frozen Section'.

In this, during surgery, the surgeon takes the biopsy from a tumor and pathologist immediately froze the sample and cut it in slices then sees under the microscope. This will give a fair idea about a tumor is malignant or benign.

A final histopathological report will be conveyed after 2-3 days after proper staining. So it is possible to determine the type of tumor during surgery only.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
