How Can A Dog Scratch Be Treated?

My pit bull puppy likes to jump on me when she’s excited. When she jumps, she scratches me, and my skin immediately swells up where the scratches were. The scratch marks doesn’t swell up, and instead I get bumps like how a fresh mosquito bite would look. Am I allergic or is it because my puppy needs to be cleaned (because I keep her outside)?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The bumps are part of your body's inflammatory reaction to the scratch marks.

If they are significant or last a long period of time then using an anti-inflammatory cream such as Voltarengel or tablet (example, Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Cataflam), may help.

If the skin is broken and any bacteria enter the skin then an infection can occur which would cause persistent swelling, redness and discomfort. This does not occur in most persons.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
