Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can A Ganglion Cyst On The Base Of The Thumb Be Treated?
I have a ganglion cyst about the size of a medium marble on the inside of my left wrist between the base of the thumb and carpal tunnel area. After trying varying treatments over about a year, the next step seems to be surgical excision. How long is recovery for excision in this area? I work a desk job and also am a yoga teacher. How long should I expect to be off my hands during yoga or other exercises?
Most of the ganglion cysts do not require treatment. These cysts can simply be observed.
Surgical removal of the cyst is needed when the mass is painful, interferes with function especially when your dominant hand is involved, or causes numbness or tingling of the hand or fingers.
The surgeon will usually go into the joint and remove the cyst, along with the ‘stalk’ that holds it in place. This should give relief to those suffering with pain.
Be aware though, that cyst can come back after surgery. In most cases, the recovery should take from 2–6 weeks.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
