Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is an alcoholic; trying to stave off withdrawal, she drinks when she says she starts to experience tremors. She recently asked me if schizophrenia runs in our family.she claims to have crazy dreams and shes not in a full deep sleep and she sees thing that arent there, and hear things as well. I tell her she s experiencing alcohol withdrawl symtoms; she claims schizophrenia. She has experienced trauma in her mid teen years (rape) , i read trauma can lead to be schizophrenia. Can you help me to sort this out?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
We understand the concern you have. In fact, alcohol withdrawal can give you symptoms like that of schizophrenia but they are generally on day second or third and do not persist for a long time.
The symptoms of seeing things when not there or heating things when not there ( called hallucination ) are less likely with alcohol withdrawal and more like symptoms of schizophrenia, but this can be with other psychotic disorders as well which always need a detailed evaluation by a psychiatrist. So I would strongly suggest she must see a psychiatrist on an urgent basis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
