Hi! I had my Tragus pierced last September. It s gotten infected several times off and on. I was told not to touch it anymore and this should help with infections. I went to clean it last night and notice that my skin has grown completely over the flat back of the piercing. How can this be corrected and why did this happen!! HELP!!!!

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Repeated infections seem to have developed scar to cover the piercing.Continue with proper cleaning with salt water/ hot water with detol drops ... dry it & apply & light massaging, antibiotic skin ointment ( like over the counter soframycin ) Avoid using any ornaments till it heals well. It would take a long time as infection is deep rooted. In case this does not help , consult your doctor for oral antibiotic & anti inflammatory medicines. After complete healing see for the opening ... weather it's patent... avoid forceful trusting of an ear ring) Use properly fitting ear ring ( avoid very tight or loose one. avoid metal that is allergic to you - this may repeat injury & infection.) If the piercing is blocked by scar tissue ... you may need re piercing IF AT ALL ESSENTIAL.
Thanks.
