Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a small blood clot in my lung one week after prostate cancer surgery. How long should I stay on blood thinners. It has been seven months since the blood clot. I am about to start radiation for about 6 weeks. Should I stay on Blood thinners for the rest of my life
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Well, for small clots such as in your case, it is recommendable to stay on blood thinners for at least 3 months and it should be confirmed with CT scan that clot has dissolved. Now, it depends on other factors, such as your age, other coagulation parameters and BMI if you re gonna take it for lifetime or just for shorter period. You should ask your hematologist about this. In every case, you need to take it as long as necessary since it has minor side effects and can pevent serious complications
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health.
