Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was bitten by a stray kitten. The kitten was not used to humans. When touched, it hissed, attempted to scratch, and then eventually bit my hand. I had on rubber gloves, but the bite broke skin. I cleaned the wound. And when in the ER I advised I was unsure of my last tetanus shot. They gave me a prescription for amoxicillin. Is it safe to asume the gloves stopped saliva? Or should I receive the rabies vaccination? This was one day ago.
Yes, rabies prophylaxis is recommended for cat bite which has broken your skin. One dose of the vaccine is administered on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 30 intramuscularly. Injections must be given into the deltoid region or, in small children, into the anterolateral area of the thigh. Minor scratch without bleeding is classified as category 2 according to WHO classification and immediate vaccination is recommended for such injury. Advice 1. Rabies vaccines (Injection Rabipur) on days on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 30 intramuscularly 2. Injection Tetvac – stat intramuscular single dose 3. Wash the wound with soap and tap water several times 4. Apply any over the counter antiseptic 5. Continue amoxicillin as suggested Thanks
