I started clarithromycin on Monday for chest infection, had headaches ,flu like symptoms cough for 3 weeks, dry, temp. 38.2, shivers, feeling grotty. Now Friday evening and still feel grotty, headache back ache, cough and temp of 38.1. Should the tablets have worked by now. The temp always comes in the evening about 5-9pm, sometimes about 1 or 2am. when I start shivering. Thanks.

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

The symtoms complex you have mentioned suggestive of URTI(upper respiratory tract infection), you don't need to worry as it can be very well cured by timely treatment. I suggest you to consult a physician and get the following things done.
(1)- Antibiotic therapy is essential and newer penicillin like amoxicillin are the preferred drug and treatment is required for five to seven days. If you are allergic to penicillin azithromycin or cephalosporins can be tried.
(2)- You can use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and ease the sore throat.
(3)- Do warm saline gargles or gargling with a antiseptic mouth wash.
(4)- Expectorant cough syrups can be tried to clear mucus and secretions.
(5)- Adequate bed rest is needed to fight off the infection.
(6)- Have healthy diet and drink lot of water. Avoid carbonated drinks.
(7)- Get a chest X-ray and basic blood investigations.

Thanks
Dr Shinas Hussain
