How Can Chronic Backache Be Treated?

I saw a neurosurgeon today for chronic back pain. I was told that I need to have surgery-extreme lateral inbody fusion and posterior lumbar fusion with facetectomy. I know that I have to have 2 incisions-side and back. Are there any screws or metal rods being placed?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion is a type of spinal fusion procedures where the surgeon makes a back area incision to fuse (mend) the lumbar spine bones together. During this surgery the intervertebral disc is removed and it is replaced with a bone spacer (metal or plastic may also be used). There are two types of this procedures. The first involves placing two small bone graft spacers, one graft on each side of the interbody space (right and left). And another teqnique involves placing only one bone graft spacer in the middle of the interbody space.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
