How Can Chronic Constipation Be Treated?

I am having severe constipation. It s been 7 days. I am now suffering from heartburn and have tried several foods to relieve my discomfort that are not working at this time. I am a 56 yr. old female that has had breast cancer twice. The last time I took treatment was 8-2014. I have had constipation or diarreah since going through treatment but it has never lasted this long. I also have type 2 diabetes. What should I do.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. since you are suffering from diabetes thus it must be remembered that poorly controlled or long-term diabetes may lead to diabetic neuropathy causing damage to nerves controlling the digestive tract and resulting in constipation, diarrhea so check with your blood sugar level and/or consult with your primary care doctor or an Endocrinologist if this happens to be the cause

2. Since with chemotherapy, associated drugs are given to manage pain, nausea/ vomiting, depression which can cause constipation as a side effect.

3. As constipation is chronic thus consult with your primary care doctor as he will be in better condition as how to approach the symptom, till then

. Take old brown rice, green gram, chickpea, green vegetables, bottle gourd, water, papaya, grapes, muskmelon, raisins, dates, orange, pears, guava, apricot, honey, milk.

. Avoid newly harvested rice, black gram, peas, banana, potato, spicy/junk food, late nights, sedentary lifestyle.
. Purgation with olive oil is best and free of side effect
. Early morning: eat 10 cashew nuts and 4 raisins and drink water after coming out of bed
. Do exercise which increases the tone of abdominal muscles and stimulates peristalsis like:
. Straight leg raising
. Scissor kicks
. Sit-ups
. Walking, jogging

PS. As a rule, one should always palpate the abdomen, and if there is tenderness, never give enema or strong purgatives
