How Can Diabetes Along With Hypothyroidism And Dementia Be Treated?

Diabetes/osteoarthrytis/hypothyroidism and recently diagnosed with mild dementia and hashimoto s encephalopathy. Low appetite making feeding difficult. This is my wife s condition. She is 78 yrs old. We are seeing neurologists and not getting anywhere. Need advise.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You start with what can be adjusted easiest. The hypothyroidism. Then, checking on the diabetes--it has to be corrected somewhat but it cannot be fully fixed up until the thyroid is stable. Then when metabolic and other causes of just being sick are fixed such as UTI's, then see what can be done with dementia. Dementia rarely can be fixed and rarely can even be stabilized. BUT sometimes other sicknesses make someone look worse than what they actually are.
