How Can Fever Along With Sore Throat And Chest Congestion Be Treated?

Hi, my husband is suffering from the flu...fever of 100, sore throat, congestion and coughing, “heavy head”/headache and no energy. He is usually a go getter. He is 72 years old. He has some Amoxicillin (500 mg) that he takes before he goes to the dentist (double knee replacement). I’m thinking he could take one of those antibiotic tablets every 8 hours. What do you think? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your husband is suffering from upper respiratory tract infection. He may need an antibiotic course if he is having chest congestion and sore throat. Amoxycillin alone will not be very effective if there is a mixed infection. A combination of Amoxycillin with clavulanic acid will be more effective. But it is a prescription drug and you should consult your physician before starting it.

Meanwhile, you should keep him hydrated. Give him hot drinks like soup and tea. Tell him to take steam inhalation and betadine gargles at regular intervals. It will help to recover faster and also help to relieve the congestion and sore throat. He can take tablet Paracetamol at eight hourly intervals for the fever.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma.amman
