How Can Fractured Lower Legs Be Treated?

My nephew broke both bones in his lower leg. After the nightmare of his lungs filling up with junk from the leg. They were finally able to do the surgery. It has never healed right 4 months later he can not walk right and has what looks like a tennis ball on the side of his leg. We kept telling the dr there was a problem and he kept saying it was a bad break and was going to take awhile. At the last appointment when we got there they said sorry the injury is more than 3 months old we cant see you. What do you think it could be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The description you have given seems like something called a malunion or a nonunion, in which the fractured segments united improperly or not united at all. A revision surgery is the only option left and sometimes he might require complex procedures like Ilizarov operation. Consult an orthopedic who is specialized in Ilizarov and get evaluated.

Wishing your family a good health.

Thanks.
