How Can Hernia In The Groin Area Be Treated?

My husband has a hernia in his groin. He saw a surgeon a few months ago and he said it was ok to wait because it would move in and out and there was no pain. But in the last few days there has benn pain so I checked it and it’s bigger and it won’t move at all now. Should I take him to a er?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern for your beloved husband.
He needs to be examined in ER.

Based on the history given your husband seems to have developed an incarcerated hernia in the groin (inguinal region).

An incarcerated hernia can become strangulated, which cuts off the blood flow to the tissue that's trapped and that can be life-threatening if it isn't treated.

So, take your husband to the ER for proper clinical examination.

The doctor might order an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan to confirm the diagnosis and if the hernia is small and isn't bothering him, the doctor might recommend watchful waiting. However, the enlarged or painful hernias usually require surgery to relieve discomfort and prevent serious complications.

The hernia can be treated by two types of operations — open hernia repair and laparoscopic repair.

Hope to have answered your query.
Best regards.
