Insomnia in patients with dementia can be associated with decreased quality of life, increased health care costs, increased nursing home placement, and increased caregiver burden.
Treatments may include pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions.
So far as pharmacologic intervention is concerned, for most patients with dementia, melatonin may be a good alternative to the traditional clonazepam therapy.
Non-pharmacologic intervention includes good sleeping practices such as:
Exposure to bright light, try to socialize, optimize the timing of medications, avoid caffeine and alcohol, keep the bedroom dark, clean bed sheets and pillows.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
