How Can Irregular Periods Be Treated?

Hi, I had a couple questions about my menstrual cycle that I have not been able to talk to my gyno about yet... I currently do not have health insurance so I m unable to book an appointment. For years I have had a terribly irregular menstrual cycle. Basically ever since I first started my period. I started around the age of 11, and for a few months it was regular and on time every month, but shortly after my periods began to be irregular. I would skip a month in the beginning and then get my period late two weeks the following month... they became so irregular that eventually, at the age of 14 I stopped having them altogether. I didn t have a period for probably around two years, and started having them more frequently at the age of 17. But regardless, they were still irregular. Around early-mid 2016 my periods started to come every month, only being maybe a week late when I d get them... this lasted around 6 or 7 months, and then I went back to skipping a month or two of having them. I am 19 years old now, and just got my periOd yesterday for the first time since June. I was not sexually active until April of this year. My periods have always been very heavy as well, and lasted at minimum 5 days. My longest period was 8 days long. Earlier this year was the first time I saw a short period; in January, march and April my periods were only 3-4 days long and very light... my period this month is the heaviest I ve had since late 2016. I also see lots of blood clots on my periods, a very big one just this morning I found. My period this month has been the most painful one I ve had in a while. I m very confused, and thought that I may have ovarian cysts of some kind, so last year when I DID have health insurance I booked an appointment for October 2016 to get some blood work done to test if I had any. I told my gyno all of the symptoms I have explained here & she did not give me much other advice or insight as to what was wrong other than offering to put me on birth control, or to have the IUD procedure done. I never did go on birth control, but am considering it now if it will help to regulate my cycle. The blood tests came back and I was told I had no signs of ovarian cysts, but why my cycle is so irregular & sometimes very painful still confuses me. I appreciate any help or advice you may have for me, thank you very much!
