How Can Itching Around The Anus Be Treated?

I recently had a yeast infection and went to urgent care for it. They gave me a pill that would work in 72 hours. It did work, but then days later I had hemorrhoids. I now have a very red rash, with itching. Cannot get rid of it. Any suggestions? The rash is higher up from my anus.

Hi,

There are many causes of anal itching, but based on your description, it does sound like hemorrhoids.

Assuming that is the case, there are a few easy things you can try that help most people. First, keeping your stools soft help the hemorrhoids from getting worse.

You can use something like Metamucil or Docusate for this. Then, there are corticosteroid creams you can apply to help with the itching, like Preparation H (hydrocortisone cream).

Finally, sitz baths often give patients a lot of relief. You can buy them, or you can make one yourself by filling a bathtub with warm water and adding about a quarter cup of salt, then immerse yourself in the water for 15-30 minutes. All of these things you can get over the counter.

I hope that helps. If none of these treatments improve your symptoms, you will likely need to let a doctor take a look and possibly do a procedure to treat the hemorrhoids. But I think you have a good chance of avoiding that with these treatments.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
