How Can Leg Cellulitis Be Treated?

i have leg cellulitis. i am on keflex 500 mg qid for 2 weeks. Since i have been very resistive to antibiotics my dr recommends 500 mg bid for years to help prevent reinfection. i too am a dr. now since keflex has a short half life of a few hours, taking it bid would not give me total protection.

I do understand your pain and discomfort. As per your history please follow IDSA 2014 guidelines for leg cellulites:

1)Non-purulent - [mild] Dicloxacillin, Cephalexin, Amoxicillin/clavulanate, Clindamycin, Moderate-Nafcillin or oxacillin, Ceftriaxone, Cefazolin, Severe-Vancomycin plus piperacillin/tazobactam

2)Purulent - Moderate-Doxycycline or minocycline, Trimethoprim, Sulfamethoxazole, Severe infection-Vancomycin, Daptomycin, Linezolid, Ceftaroline, TelavancinIncision and drainage of abscess is indicated In all purulent cases.
