Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
for the past 2 years my husband has diarrhea in his sleep. It became more frequent and now it s every night. Sometimes he may need to pass gas and actually soils his underwear. He is 51 years old. He s had lab work done but doctors always come back saying there is nothing there and everything looks normal. What can be causing this problem?
Thanks for putting your query over here. I have gone through your question and understand your concern.Cause of nocturnal diarrhoea can be diabetes mellitus.Hope in the lab work of your husband ,blood glucose levels have been evaluated. If not ,then it needs to be done.Other possibility may be inflammatory bowel disease like Chrons disease or ulcerative colitis. You need to visit gastroenterologist who can assess the condition using colonoscopy and accordingly ,specific medications to treat the condition will be given.Diarrhea for more than 1 year is a big concern and all these diagnostic follow up is necessary to establish the underlying cause.Besides nocturnal diarrhoea,it is also chronic diarrhoea which points to causes like giardiasis, malabsorption syndrome, lactose intolerance etc for which stool tests will be necessary.Treatment will depend upon the underlying cause. Also would like to ask if he is on any medications? Thanks and regards.
