Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Pain And Swelling In The Rib Cage Be Treated?
I was in an abusive marriage years ago and after my ex broke my rib, I wasn t allowed to go to the Dr. to fix it. As a result, the bone healed improperly and is now calcified and even though massage alleviates the pain for a day or so, by the third day, the area is swollen and painful......and now I am experiencing spasms in that area that leave me breathless. I have had an MRI, CAT scan and it was finally found with an ultrasound. My Dr. said there isn t much that can be done with a second rib that healed like mine did. He equated it to an ice cream cone....the bone is protruding, causing the swelling of the tissue around and over it.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. There is no permanent cure for your fractured rib. You can wear rib belt to prevent mobilization. Apply ice packs on swelling. Avoid movements causing pain. Avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise. Avoid sudden jerky jerky movements of chest. Take painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs as and when required. By doing all these, you will have less pain and swelling. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
