How Can Painful Shingles Be Treated?

my mother likely has shingles and has let them go for days if not weeks. She is 82 and has copd. The itching is not the problem. She is having severe nerve pain. It is Sunday, she will not go to the hospital because the ER is so stressful for her. I have a tramadol I can give her or a klonopin. Is either a problem as long as I watch her closely?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Shingles is extremely painful condition and common analgesics(pain killers) doesn’t offer much relief. You can try more powerful analgesics like Gabapentin and Tramadol which are much effective than conventional analgesics. Also try acyclovir ointment for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
