How Can Pericardial Effusion Be Treated?

My husband is 61 and very fit. Works out daily but he was hospitalized for water around his heart. Doctors said could be from him having phnomonia a virus or do to alcohol . they said he is at 22 % and in 3 days he gets another ultrasound and if he is not at 37 % he will need a pace maker. Can the heart repair from 22 to 37% within 3 months? And what about pace maker? Is that the next best thing or is there other options? The doctor said there is but he did nit want to overwhelm us that day in till we have the ultrasound. Thans for responding.

Hi,

Consult a cardiologist and get evaluated.

An echo test is required to assess the severity of the disease. If there is much fluid collection, it has to be drained by a procedure called pericardiocentesis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
