Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have plantar fascitis so need firm arch support. I don t like my foot smothered in a completely closed shoe too. Used to wear Birkenstocks, but don t know that they make any models with adequate arch support. Have Haflinger slippers for inside use, easy to get on an off, but don t cradle the feet enough to make me feel secure in walking, yet I like being able to slip and and off easily. What kinds of slippers/sandals will help me?
For the management of plantar fasciitis two aspects of management are important.(1) The use of soft, pressure distributing insoles in foot wear with a 5 to 7 mm medial arch support to be worn at all times when you are on your feet. Materials like Poron, Silicon, Platazote, EVA are good. (2) Plantar fascia stretching exercises. There are three main exercises which will slowly, gently and gradually stretch the fascia from its now contracted state to the normal length. The method of how to do this can be explained in person by a Podiatric Surgeon, or possibly you could get it from the internet. The important aspect is that the stretching should be done gently, for about 5 minutes each exercise, and please do it at least morning and evening. These should be regularly done for at least 6 to 8 weeks, and more if required.(3). Please keep the feet skin soft and supple with a skin softner like Vaseline.
