Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband had a CT scan of the chest thinking it was pneumonia. The diagnosis was pulmonary fibrosis. We have an appointment with the pulmonologist on July 20 and have done the pulmonary function test, but no results yet. Is there anything we can do for the next month to help him feel better?
Noted the history about your husband and understood the concerns. Pulmonary fibrosis is a permanent disease and is caused by formation of fibrosis bands in the lung tissues thereby reducing the breathing capacity as the lungs do not expand fully.
This reduced intake of oxygen gives the symptoms of breathlessness, weakness, fainting and so on. This is a condition that is not reversible and the exact cause is not known.
Hence the management is as follows: Oral steroids to reduce the fibrosis and inflammation. Therapeutic dosages of multivitamins particularly Vitamin A and D. Living in an atmosphere where there is no scarcity of oxygen like polluted air.
Oxygen supplement if possible. Avoid stress and anxiety. No smoking if he is doing so. All these things will help to have better life.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
