How Can Shingles Be Treated?

Diagnosed with shingles Friday. Am on the antiviral med. I refused pain meds because I don t want to take the opiates and I am allergic to codeine. I have been using 200 mg ibuprofen and cool washcloth compresses. Are there any ointments with pain killers in them? I will be using calamine lotion when my son brings it tonight. My doctor thought it bode well for me that I was diagnosed so early in the onset...and maybe I would have a lesser case. The pain, though, is difficult to manage. EL

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to shingles.

I recommend using antiviral medication such as Acyclovir tablets.

I also recommend using acyclovir cream for local application.

For the pain, you can use painkillers such as Ibuprofen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
