How Can Sore Throat Be Treated?

I have had a stuffed up throat for a little over a week now. I do not have any other symptoms, I only get a sore throat from coughing so much to clear my throat. During the day I’m always stuffy but it’s not unbearable, but once it hits night time it gets worse and I have a hard time sleeping. I’ve had this happen before when the season changed this past winter to spring and it lasted almost an entire month before it finally went away, is it possibly seasonal allergies? Whatever the case what is the best way to get rid of this? I’ve tried cough drops, various allergy pills, warm tea with honey, eating better, nothing seems to work.

1. As the symptoms are there for a week now, consult an ENT Doctor for a strep test and for further examination and management:

i. He will inspect the throat with a good torch ad tongue depressor to look out for following possibilities:

- whether tonsils are red & inflamed with tender tonsillar lymph nodes below the angle of mandible [acute tonsillitis]
- whether entire throat i.e. posterior pharyngeal wall is inflamed [acute pharyngitis]
- are there inflamed rough granules over the posterior pharyngeal wall [granular pharyngitis]

ii. whatever be the cause, management of them remain the same:
. steam inhalation: 3-4 times a day.
. warm salt water gargles.
. voice rest and rest at home.
. take hot drinks to sip, avoid fried foods, cold drinks, ice cream, oily food
. Antibiotic, in either case, would be azithromycin/erythromycin and syrup ibuprofen and paracetamol for symptomatic relief from pain and fever.

PS. The choice of antibiotic will vary from doctor to doctor and from locality to locality
