How Can Sore Throat Be Treated?

My toddler grandson and his parents are coming to stay. They are all taking amoxicillin for strep throat. I was with them last weekend, and now have a sore throat. I can t get to a doctor for a strep test until at least tomorrow, if not Monday, but I have leftover amoxicillin from last year. four x 500mg capsules. Do you recommend I start the course now and get more (to make a full course) when I see a doctor on Monday?

Hello,

In my opinion, you should wait until you see your doctor and do strep test before taking any medication. It is important to be sure you have a strep test positive before you start medication because your sore throat may be from a different reason.

It may be a sore throat due to viruses, and you do not need antibiotics at all. So until you see your doctor does not start an antibiotic, but you can use paracetamol in case of pain in throat or discomfort or temperature rise.
