How Can Strep Throat Be Treated?

I was recently diagnosed with Strep throat. I was prescribed penicillin, but I m worried the dose is wrong. I m female, 34, 135 lbs, 5 7 , with no existing health problems. My doc prescribed me 500 mg of penicillin vk 3x per day (every 8 hours), but everything I m reading says the proper dose for an adult with strep is 500mg 2x per day (or 250mg 4x per day). Why is my prescription higher than the recommendation?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to tell you that the dose prescribed by your physician is correct. Most likely he has prescribed you Amoxicillin which is the most common drug prescribed for streptococcal throat and it is dose is 500 mg 8 hourly.

I would advise you to continue with the prescribed dose and review with your physician after completion of course. Along with that you should do betadine gargles which will help in faster recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
