How Can Swelling And Tenderness On The Big Toe Be Treated?

Hi I am visiting here in India (Kolkata) leaving on Wednesday about 3 weeks back my right foot around the big toe swelled and hab pain, I went to see an orthopedic dr here in Kolkata I was asked to have my blood work checked for Uric acid. It was 7.2 also there were urea and creatinine tests done came back with normal level. An X-ray also taken on right big toe, no bony injury was seen. He prescribed me febutaz(febuxostat) 40 once a day. I have been taking that, swelling gone down and pain is also much better. But the bone under the big toe is still tender with little swelling I am leaving Wednesday March 8 and I have no plan to extend my stay here, do I go see a gen physician in USA or internal medicine Doctor? Please advise.

Hello,

Your doctor might have considered a gouty arthritis attack. I suggest taking in a pain reliever and at the same time anti-inflammatory medication like Celecoxib or Etoricoxib, on top of Febuxostat as it may cause a relapse of the attack if taken alone.

Aside from this, after the attack, I also suggest taking Colchicine (an anti-inflammatory) as a prophylaxis while taking in Febuxostat for the same reason stated above.

I suggest seeking consult from an internal medicine doctor for re-evaluation and optimization of your medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
