How Difficult Is Removal Of Anterior Plates For For Fixing Complex Tibial Plateau/fib Fracture?

How difficult/complex is removal of hardware (3 anterior plates) for fixation of complex tibial plateau/fib fracture? Accident occurred 5 months ago. Significant pain and persistent infection (cellulitis?) despite 4 week course of continuous IV antibiotic is necessitating the removal.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Once the infections sets in after any form of internal fixation (either in the form of plates & screws or intramedullary nails), it is said to persist till the implants are removed. Simple use of antibiotics will never eradicate the infection in the presence of an infected implant.

Its not a big issue to remove the implants as the screws will be lying loose due to the presence of infection.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
