How Does The Medicine, Mannitol, Affect A Stroke Affected Person?

Hi, I just wanted to know if an elderly person with stroke (minor bleeding that effect right side of the body) is treated with Mannitol can have negative impact on kidney and as such has to go through dialysis? Also, is there a possibility that Mannitol can make the condition worse like coma? I understand it depends upon case to case basis but are these normal sides effects based on clinical research?

Many of clinical study suggest that mannitol does not work well with ischaemia and haemorrhage stroke. As well out come are not so good since it also gives lots side effects along with effect on regular usage for long time. So I suggest to try with alternate medicine if possible. But further guideline it will be better to take from your treating doctor since he has seen all reports he can guide you best.
Mannitol helps for reduce cerebral oedema, it might improve cerebral perfusion by decreasing viscosity. As well side effects are fluid and electrolyte imbalance, cardiovascular pulmonary edema, as well rebound of cerebral edema with long term use. Take care.
