Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it normal for bruised ribs (assuming bruised) to hurt worse (breathing, coughing, laughing, moving) approaching the 2 Week post injury mark? Original trauma was a slip and fall into or onto a boulder. Bounced off the left side of my chest and onto my posterior. All the secondary hit bruises are gone. About the same for the scrapes. Had progressed to the point of scapular squeezes and deep breaths without pain but it seems I ve had a set back. Normal?
Bruised ribs may take 4-6 weeks to heal, however it may vary from patient to patient. To help bruised ribs heal faster you need to stay at rest and restrict your activities or any sports. Do not massage, do not wrap anything on it. Avoid addictions if any. Maintain correct posture in which you are comfortable while walking or when asleep.
However, you are suggested to get clinically examined in ER, get X-ray or CT / MRI done to rule out any fracture, hair crack, muscle or tendon inflammation or any other pathology. Get treated at the earliest. You can take Combiflam (combination of Ibuprofen / paracetamol), one sos when pain. Take the medicine after food.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
