Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 48 yrs old male and have swollen tonsils and lymph nodes. My doctor has me on amoxicillin for almost a month and i did not improve. He finally at my request took a throat culture showed that I have enterobacter bacteria in my throat. Now he has me taking ciprofloxacin 500mg twice a day for a week. I m on my 4th day and although my lymph nodes are less swollen, my throat and tonsils are still red. All of my blood work came back normal and I ve been to a ENT as well that says no signs of cancer. My question is; am I taking the right med and how do I know if its gone. Thanks.
Now that you doctor has taken a bacterial culture and started you on appropriate antibiotics, in a total of 7 to 10 days, you should be cured of the throat infection. It would be helpful, if you could do warm saline gargles, at least twice a day, during this period. This will hasten up the resolution. Please do get yourself reviewed by the ENT surgeon, after the course of antibiotics to determine if the infection has resolved completely.
