How Long Does Benzodiazepine Stay In The Body?

Hello, I am currently on Lorazepam for anxiety/panic attacks. I normally take seratraline, 100mg 1x per day however my panic attacks were out of control, thus the Benzo. My question is, I have been taking it for the past few days and my panic attacks seem to be under control as I continue to take Seratraline every day. How long will it take for the Benzodiazepine to be completely out of my system? I ask because my job entails me operating heavy machinery. My last lorazepam was at 8AM this morning.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The half-life of a medication is the time it takes for the medication in the body to decrease by half. It takes 3 to 4 half-lives for a medication to be completely eliminated.

The half-life of Lorazepam is 12 to 18 hours, this means it would approximately take 36 hours to 90 hours (almost 3 days), for it to be mostly eliminated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
